Falling in love with fall

I love fall.  It’s no secret that it’s my favorite season.  And as soon as I wake up to that first crisp morning, I am so ready to surround myself with all things autumn related!  Pumpkins, mums, candles, apples, leaves…the house gets all dressed up in fall colors, my favorite coffee mugs get moved to the front of their shelf, the cozy sweaters and snuggly pjs come out of hiding.

Why is this season so popular?  It’s such an interesting mix of reasons…  Autumn is a season of crisp weather, beautiful colors, warm drinks on cold mornings.  It’s a peaceful time, but it’s also a season of letting go and settling into a slower pace.  A time to appreciate beauty during the short time it’s here.  And a time of anticipation, starting the slow slide toward Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a brand new year.

Fall is also all about gratitude, enjoyment, and sharing your love of the season.  So I’ve compiled a collection of 10 of my favorite fall quotes to share with you!  Read, enjoy, and share the love!

How to make a cozy autumn kit

If you’re not feeling the fall season just yet – maybe the weather is still more summery than fall-like or life has just been busy lately – we’re going to create a Cozy Autumn Kit to get you in the mood!

It seems like fall is the favorite season for a LOT of us.  And why not? The weather is crisp, the trees are beautiful, the clothing options are much cozier. (Hello, sweaters, boots, and layers!)  There are SO MANY fun things to do (if you need a few ideas, here are 24 ways to have a cozy autumn)…and it’s just a cozy season!

But this year, I’m just not feeling it…yet.  It’s been a little warmer than normal, the leaves haven’t REALLY started turning, and I’m afraid to put pumpkins on my porch because the neighborhood squirrels seem unusually hungry right now…

So, I’ve decided to build myself a Cozy Autumn Kit!   And I want to share what I’m including with you, in case you happen to be in the same boat.  Even though I have minimalist tendencies (just ask my poor decidedly-not-a-minimalist husband), occasionally something new to bring in a new season helps to get me into the spirit of those changing seasons.

Pro tip: To keep the clutter from taking over, I have a storage tub for each season.  Nothing too big, and if it doesn’t all fit at the end of the season, it’s time for a quick declutter of that tub.  I like this system, because I can just pull out what I need and use that storage tub to hold any items that don’t fit the seasonal theme at the moment.  No clutter, no packing things onto shelves. Just keep it simple, easy to access, and easy to store away. And the best part is, if you pack everything away at the change of the seasons, next year your seasonal items will be ready and waiting for you, but also like unpacking a little bit of a surprise because you haven’t seen them for several months!

So what goes into a Cozy Autumn Kit?

I think a good Cozy Autumn Kit should include the coziest things you associate with fall, to get those Autumn vibes flowing.  For me, that means fall colors (like oranges, reds, browns – really all the colors of fall leaves), warm drinks, fall scents, and definitely something plaid…    It should also be fairly inexpensive, full of easy to find items, and not just a bunch of small clutter, but things that you can actually use and enjoy!

So here’s what I’ve come up with!  Every single thing on this list is from Target (because honestly, we’ll probably all be there anyway).  You can pick them up in-store on your normal Target run or order online (links below to make it easy!) and get a nice big box of fall wonderfulness delivered!

My 2019 Cozy Autumn Kit:

A Mug – I use a mug every single day, so it definitely fits the “useful” requirement. And it’s true, I’ve never met a pumpkin I didn’t like!  This mug is such a nice shade of fall-ish orange, so into the box it goes!

Chai tea & apple cider – Since we need something to go in that cute mug, these are my 2 picks.  Chai tea just TASTES like fall, with all those spices. And I know the apple cider isn’t the fancy, freshly pressed kind, but it’s nice to have a quick version on hand.

Pumpkin Candle – This candle is just too cute!  There are several different scents to make your home smell like fall and there are also a few different colors. Especially fun, because after the candle is gone, you can clean it out and still have a little pumpkin to decorate with!

Fall Leaves Garland – My house doesn’t seem ready for Autumn until I have a few leaves out and a fall leaf garland is a really easy way to do it!  Put it on your fireplace mantle, across the kitchen table like a runner, over a door or window…lots of options here!

Chunky Blanket – Time for the cozy stuff!  A good chunky knit blanket in a fall color not only adds a little more “fall” to your home decor, but it’s also nice to snuggle up with on a chilly evening!  (Perfect for when you’re drinking that chai or apple cider, right?)

Cozy socks – I don’t love socks until fall and winter. In fact, I almost never even think about socks the rest of the year. But as soon as fall hits, I am ALL ABOUT the fuzzy, cozy, squishy sock options.

A Sweatshirt – I already bought this sweatshirt and now I honestly want it in All. The. Colors.  It’s soft and warm (but not too heavy), really cozy to snuggle into.

A Plaid Scarf – And because it just doesn’t feel like fall without something plaid, this scarf will finish off my fall cozy kit for the year.  Great color combinations and it’ll keep the chill off when you’re outside.

So that’s what I’m putting in my cozy autumn kit this year.

Feel free to mix, match, add your own items, and make your very own Cozy Autumn Kit. Fall is here, let’s celebrate the season!

24 ways to have a cozy autumn

24 ways to have a cozy autumn

24 ways to have a cozy autumn

Fall is hands-down my favorite season.  The weather can be chilly, unpredictable, and absolutely beautiful! The trees look different every single day. The food is warm and comforting. The nights are cool enough to snuggle up under a blanket in front of the fireplace.  It’s glorious!

I’ve put together this list of ways to have a cozy autumn.  These are all the fun things that I like to do during this beautiful season and I want to share it with you. I’m not calling it a bucket list, though – I always feel like that puts pressure on us to “do all the things!” just so we can mark them off the list.  Please don’t do that. Instead, read through, decide what sounds like fun to you, and simply enjoy!

Here are some ideas for your cozy fall:

1. Go apple picking

I used to do this every year as a child, with my parents and grandparents.  Good memories! Yes, of course, you can just go to the grocery store and buy all the apples you want, but going to an orchard, seeing the trees, drinking some fresh cider, and maybe eating an apple fritter…mmmm…it’s an event!  And if you have the chance, it’s a great way to spend a fall afternoon.

2. Sit by a bonfire

It doesn’t seem like fall until I spend a little time sitting next to a backyard fireRoast some hot dogs, marshmallows, or make s’mores.  Turn on a little music, throw on your coziest sweatshirt or jacket, and let that flickering flame lull you into relaxation.

3. Enjoy the fall leaves

Those trees!  I’m so happy to live in an area that has a ridiculously pretty fall.  So many different types of leaves changing color, and ALL the maple trees with their bright red leaves.  Take a few minutes to go for a drive, especially on a crisp sunny day, and just enjoy those colors! If you’d rather hike than drive, why not collect some leaves along the way?  Pinterest has some pretty amazing ideas on how to use them and bring some of those autumn colors into your home.

4. Find your way through a corn maze

I’m showing my midwestern roots with this one, but I love a good corn maze!  If you’ve never been, it’s exactly what it sounds like…a cornfield, with a maze cut into it for you to find your way through.  Often, there’s a pumpkin patch involved too. If you have the chance, check one out this year!

5. Attend a fall festival

Oktoberfest, pumpkin festivals, mum festivals, food festivals…it seems like there are dozens each year and I always try to make it to at least one.  A quick Google or Facebook search can help you find the best fall festivals near you.

6. Light candles

I don’t burn candles all year long, but as soon as the days start to become shorter and the nights cooler, I want candles lit all the time!  Fall scents are my favorite, so I tend to go into candle-overdrive.  (If candles don’t work well for you, due to young kiddos, pets, etc, flameless candles will work just fine!)

7. Buy a new cozy blanket

I have a small admission to make – my mom is an award-winning quilter, so I have more quilts and blankets than any one person needs.  But each fall, I find myself drawn to a new, cozy, fuzzy blanket. I have my eye on this one this year.  Snuggling up under a cozy blanket with a cup of something warm is perfect for a rainy fall day!

8. Make chili or soup

With cool weather comes warm food!  I’m pretty sure I could live on soup and chili all winter long, but it’s not only eating it that I enjoy.  A pot of something yummy simmering on the stove for an afternoon, making the house smell warm and welcoming, is a wonderful thing!  Here are a few of my favorite recipes:

Buffalo Chili Recipe – I add beans to this (because chili without beans is just sauce) and it’s wonderful!

Beef Barley Stew Recipe

9. Go to a football game

I LOVE football.  (I start counting down to football season around May each year.)  But even if you’re not a sports fan, a football game is a fun experience. Fans all around you, for the same reason – to cheer on their team!  Hot dogs, hoodies, and hot chocolate! Check out a professional game, college, or even a local high school game for a fun fall afternoon.

10. Add some fall decor to your house

This is so easy to do! It can be inexpensive, and will make your home 10 times cozier!  You don’t have to go all out, but a few fall garlands, a basket of apples, and some pumpkins or gourds placed around the house will bring that fall vibe indoors.

11. Have your friends over for a fall party

Why not have a little party to celebrate the new season? Each year in late September or early October, we host a Fall Welcoming Party for our friends and it is the coziest party!  All you need is a pot of chili, some hot cider, a few snacks, and as many friends or family as you’d like to invite! It doesn’t need to be a big event, just spend a little time with the people you love, celebrating the season. It’s a great chance to play a few games or just visit next to the fire.

12. Buy a new cozy sweater

Along with a new cozy blanket, the first day with a chill in the air, and I start sweater shopping for something comfy, cute, and oversized to snuggle into. Sweaters just scream fall to me!  I have my eye on this one

13. Visit a farmer’s market

A lot of people think of farmer’s markets as a summer event, but autumn is my favorite time to go.  Sunflowers, pumpkins, apples, and squash are in season. Everything just looks so beautiful (and yummy)!

14. Take some new photos

There’s a reason that so many people take family photos in the fall.  For Christmas cards! Just kidding…but that IS a nice benefit. During the autumn months, the lighting is just a little more filtered, the changing leaves make a great background, and you can wear cute layered outfits.  Take some new family photos or just get outside and take some pictures of the fall colors to frame and hang on your wall!

15. Capture the fall scents

I mentioned candles earlier, but that’s not the only way to bring the scent of fall into your home.  Do a little baking or try out some stovetop simmer recipes, like this oneNotice the scents that happen naturally during the season and bring them home with you!

16. Watch the sunset

At least once during the fall months, go outside and watch the sunset.  You won’t regret it!

17. Bake

I don’t do much baking during the summer months.  It’s just too hot to have the oven on! When fall hits, take advantage of the cooler weather and let that stove warm up your house!  You don’t have to bake anything fancy, but fresh cookies make everything better, don’t they?

18. Go camping or rent a cabin

Fall is the very best time for a camping trip.  It’s cool enough at night to sit by the fire, warm enough during the day to go out and enjoy nature.  Plan a tent camping trip, rent a cabin, or even just camp out in the backyard, but get out there and enjoy!

19. Have a movie marathon day

Another good one for a rainy day.  Plan an entire day to spend on the couch, in your pajamas, watching your favorite movies.  Bonus points for an entire series!

20. Open those windows

I’m always amazed when people go straight from air conditioning to heat, without opening the windows in between.  (Of course, I know, there can be extenuating circumstances, like allergies or old houses with tricky windows.) But as soon as I possibly can, and for as long as I can, those windows are open!  It’s a good chance to get some fresh air into the house before winter comes.

21. Savor a warm drink

When it starts to get really chilly outside, warm drinks are the best!  Dig out your favorite mug and hot chocolate recipe or try out that coffee shop around the corner that you’ve been meaning to visit.

22. Refresh your hats and scarves

Love it or hate it, fall means winter is on the way.  Go through your hats and scarves, wash or replace as needed.  If you knit or crochet, it’s a great time to make something new!

23. Random acts of kindness

Do something nice for someone else.  It doesn’t have to be big, but even a small act of kindness will bring a smile to both of your faces.

24. Notice the small things

If you don’t do anything else on this list, do this.  Look around you, notice what is changing. Autumn is a season of change and every single day, something will be just a little different.  Take the time to pause and notice.
